This is a linear equation in x.
So you need to group like terms
[tex]1 + 4x = - 5 + 7x[/tex]
Let us group the x terms on the Right Hand Side of the equation and the constant terms on the Left Hand Side.
[tex]1 + 5 = 7x - 4x[/tex]
We can now simplify
[tex]6 = 3x[/tex]
Now let us divide both sides by 3.
[tex] \frac{6}{3} = \frac{3x}{3} [/tex]
This implies that
[tex]2 = x[/tex]
or
[tex]x = 2[/tex]

[tex]1 + 4(2) = - 5 + 7(2)[/tex]
[tex]1 + 8 = - 5 + 14[/tex]
